Pathways

Becoming an Instructor

Becoming an NSP instructor is a very rewarding process that allows you to share your expertise and passion for skiing while helping others develop their skills and safety knowledge on the slopes. Whether you are an experienced patroller or new to the NSP, the Instructor Development program offers valuable opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Step 1. Take the Instructor Development Course

The NSP Instructor Development Program encompasses various elements designed to deliver training in course management and instructional skills applicable to instructors across different organizations. The Instructor Development course emphasizes fundamental principles of effective instruction, offering universally relevant knowledge essential for aspiring instructors, regardless of the specific content they plan to teach.

Step 2. Choose Your Instructorship Path

Choose from programs including OEC, OET, Instructor Development, Avalanche, Bike Patrol, MTR, Nordic/Backcountry, ORM.

Contact our region Instructor Development Advisory for guidance.

Step 3. Mentorship, Observation, & Teaching

Mentors are assigned to each instructor candidate; this person provides guidance and support to the candidate. Candidates are required to observe seasoned instructors; this helps curate a personal teaching style. Candidates are then encouraged to create lesson plans and instruct with the guidance of their mentor; typically, candidates will instruct 2-3 separate times. When the mentor feels the candidate is ready to instruct on their own, IT will observe the candidate teaching and either approve or not approve the candidate as an instructor.
